A New Beginning
This particular breed stole my heart many years ago when my partner at the time bought one for us. I had no idea that my love for animals would grow tenfold due to the impact that little guy had on me. Sadly, my time with him ended when I left the relationship. After eight months of living without a Yorkie, I couldn’t take it any longer. My search for another Yorkie began, and well, it ended up being two.
The outcome of purchasing two fluff-balls of love was astonishing and my life transformed. After years of these incredible animals intertwining themselves into my very being, I want to share my experiences in the hope of helping other devoted Yorkie “parents” who may be in search of assistance and would possibly benefit from some of my insights.
It is important to note, however, that my advice, suggestions, or tips are from personal experience only. If your pet has a medical or other condition, your first port of call should always be a vet or appropriate professional.
After much research about toy dog breeders, I located a reputable one whose two pairs of Yorkies had just had a litter each. I’ll never forget the day I visited her home to choose my new family member. My world shrank to a roomful of tiny, fluffy balls of love, but one particular little boy crept into my heart at first sight. I could only fetch him two weeks later when he reached the 8-week mark.
A few days after making the decision, I began to panic as I worried about such a tiny baby being home alone while I went to work each day. After calling the breeder and advising her of my predicament and letting her know that I would no longer be able to take him, she suggested I take two.
I had no intention of raising two dogs, but a few days after dismissing the breeder’s suggestion, I realised that I couldn’t quell my longing for Yorkie-love, so I hopped into my car to go choose the second. A week later the three of us drove home together.
The journey home remains etched into my memory. The one I had chosen first, McCarthy, never took his eyes off me from the moment I arrived, all the way home; I like to believe he purposefully imprinted on me, as the bond I had with him was unlike any other; the other little guy, Higgins (Higgy), was grumpy and cried most of the way home, and for a few days more after that. He was having none of this moving-house business.
My devotion to them was instantaneous, and within a few days everyone settled and a beautiful new beginning began.
Why I Would Like To Help You
My journey with Higgy and McCarthy has been a 14-year one thus far. Sadly, devastatingly so, my darling McCarthy suddenly passed away on Friday, 27 July 2018, a few days before his 14th birthday. That day is one I would rather not remember…
There is so much one can learn about and from this intelligent breed, whose character and heart outweighs its size; which brings me to the purpose of this website.
Different days, different environments, different people, different smells, different places, all affect your Yorkie differently. Some of their responses to stimuli may make no sense to you whatsoever, whereas others may make perfect sense. It is therefore important for you to become in tune with your Yorkies and learn to understand their idiosyncrasies so that you can provide them with as stress-free a life as possible.
If you gain any beneficial insights from my experiences or suggestions and the outcome is a happier, healthier Yorkie, my purpose here will be fulfilled.
What’s the Point
As I’ve moved through the different life stages with my Yorkies, I have tried and tested much and there have been times when a lot of perseverance was necessary, which details I have shared around this site.
However, on looking back, I wish I had known what worked and what didn’t sooner, so that I could reduce any suffering much quicker, hence the reason I’d like to share my battles and victories along this extraordinary journey. So, that’s the point!
